چکیده

A model for extremely flexible tethered membranes is studied by Monte Carlo simulations and scaling arguments. In contrast to the standard string-and-bead models, no finite-range hard-core repulsion is used to ensure self-avoidance. Instead, the elementary triangles are taken to be impenetrable. Although this leads to an extremely floppy tethered network, the surface is found to be asymptotically flat, with a roughness exponent ( cf 0.7, consistent with the result of self-avoiding string-and-bead models. The orientationally averaged scattering intensity, on the other hand, is found to exhibit a nontrivial scaling behavior characteristic of a crumpled object with an effective fractal dimension df cf 2.7. This result is compared with recent experiments on graphite oxide sheets.

Floppy modes and nonaffine deformations in random fiber networks.

We study the elasticity of random fiber networks. Starting from a microscopic picture of the nonaffine deformation fields, we calculate the macroscopic elastic moduli both in a scaling theory and a self-consistent effective medium theory. By relating nonaffinity to the low-energy excitations of the network ("floppy modes"), we achieve a detailed characterization of the nonaffine deformations pr...

Elasticity of floppy and stiff random networks.

We study the linear and nonlinear elastic behavior of amorphous systems using a two-dimensional random network of harmonic springs as a model system. A natural characterization of these systems arises in terms of the network coordination (average number of springs per node) relative to that of a marginally rigid network deltaz: a floppy network has deltaz<0, while a stiff network has deltaz>0. ...

Rigidity loss in disordered systems: three scenarios.

We reveal significant qualitative differences in the rigidity transition of three types of disordered network materials: randomly diluted spring networks, jammed sphere packings, and stress-relieved networks that are diluted using a protocol that avoids the appearance of floppy regions. The marginal state of jammed and stress-relieved networks are globally isostatic, while marginal randomly dil...

Information Exchange between Resilient and High-Threat Networks:

High resilience military networks frequently have requirements for exchange of information with networks of low assurance, including networks of unknown threat such as the Internet. Traditionally, the approach to solving this problem is an air-gap between the two domains, with information exchanged between them on floppy disk. This approach is both time-consuming and potentially risky. This pap...

Semiflexible filamentous composites.

Inspired by the ubiquity of composite filamentous networks in nature, we investigate models of biopolymer networks that consist of interconnected floppy and stiff filaments. Numerical simulations carried out in three dimensions allow us to explore the microscopic partitioning of stresses and strains between the stiff and floppy fractions cs and cf and reveal a nontrivial relationship between th...
